The essentials
- Proxy settings do not require a Telegram login code.
- A proxy changes the route without guaranteeing anonymity.
- Test messaging, media, and required calls separately.
When a proxy is useful
A proxy changes Telegram’s connection route by sending traffic through an intermediary server. This can help when a particular network cannot reach Telegram directly. Check general internet access and identify the symptom first. If chats open but one conversation is silent, a proxy is unlikely to be the right first step.
Configure it for a specific purpose with a clear way to revert. Record whether the connection worked before the change and which settings were already enabled. On work networks, follow organizational rules and permitted connection methods; technical availability is not permission.

MTProto and SOCKS5 use different fields
Telegram apps support MTProto and SOCKS5 proxies. MTProto requires a server address, port, and secret. SOCKS5 requires an address and port, with optional proxy-specific username and password. These credentials are not your Telegram password. Never share an account login code or two-step verification password to configure a proxy.
Do not guess the protocol from an attractive server name. Obtain parameters from the operator and match them to the app fields. Even if a link fills the settings automatically, inspect the server being added. Convenient autofill does not establish a trustworthy operator.
Choose an operator you can assess
Forwarding Telegram traffic does not by itself give a proxy operator plaintext messages; the connection remains encrypted. The operator can nevertheless observe network connections and may log your IP address. A proxy therefore does not make you fully anonymous. It can also be unreliable or disappear without warning.
Prefer a source whose operator you can assess, or a specialist you know. Do not choose a random address solely for low latency. Avoid installing an unknown profile, certificate, or app when your original plan was only to fill Telegram’s built-in settings. That is a separate action with different risks.
Add the server in the correct client
On mobile, look for proxy controls under data and storage. Telegram Desktop places them among advanced connection settings; the separate Telegram for macOS client uses a different path. The official guide at core.telegram.org/proxy lists client-specific routes. Establish which app you use first, particularly on a Mac.
Choose the matching type, enter the parameters without stray spaces, and enable the connection. Preserve old settings if needed for rollback. Do not change a VPN, DNS, and several proxies simultaneously; that makes it difficult to identify which action helped or caused a fault.
For parameters supplied as text, check that sentence-ending punctuation was not copied into the address. A simple copy error can resemble an unavailable server without requiring another provider or additional software.
Worked example: added server, no connection
Suppose you add an MTProto link from someone you know, but Telegram keeps connecting. Compare the type, address, port, and secret with the original parameters, then test general internet access. If that works, ask the operator whether the server is available and compare another permitted network.
If a direct connection currently works, disable the proxy temporarily to restore communication. Do not ask for an “account activation code”; this configuration does not require one. An unresponsive server may be a server-availability problem rather than anything wrong with your profile or password.
What to test after connecting
Do more than check a successful-connection icon. Send a neutral note to Saved Messages and open a small file. Test calls separately if you need them: successful text delivery does not prove every function behaves identically. Consider mobile data costs rather than downloading large videos for an unnecessary speed test.
An MTProto connection may display an operator-promoted channel in the chat list. Telegram documents this server-support mechanism. Its presence alone does not establish a compromise, but it does not make the channel’s content a Telegram recommendation either. Assess its messages and links independently.
Keep a simple rollback path
If the proxy is unstable, disable it and test a permitted alternative route. Avoid accumulating dozens of servers whose origins you no longer remember. Automatic switching is only sensible when you trust every possible endpoint, not one familiar address among many unknown ones.
Periodically reconsider why you need the proxy and who operates it. For higher-risk privacy needs, one proxy does not resolve an entire threat model. The practical rule is simple: use an understandable route, keep account credentials private, and verify that the functions you need actually work.
