Start with the job the chat needs to do

If you plan a trip on your phone and want to open the addresses on a laptop later, a normal cloud chat is convenient. For an end-to-end encrypted one-to-one conversation tied to particular devices, consider a secret chat. These are different conversation types, not a color setting or subscription tier.

The crucial distinction is that normal Telegram chats are not end-to-end encrypted by default. Their cloud model enables synchronization. Secret chats use end-to-end encryption and are tied to the participants’ devices. Calling a conversation “private” describes who participates; it does not automatically make an ordinary direct message a secret chat.

Agree on the choice with the other person beforehand. If one expects to continue on a computer that evening while the other starts a phone-bound secret chat, confusion comes before any technical problem. Say where important details will be discussed and avoid duplicating them in a cloud chat merely for convenience. Copying content into another channel changes its practical protection even if the original remains in a correctly configured secret conversation.

Left: a secret chat on its participating devices. Right: synchronized cloud conversations. These are different modes, not consecutive stages.

What cloud chats provide

A cloud chat makes it convenient to continue conversations across devices, search old arrangements and revisit files. Signing in to the same account gives access to cloud history, provided messages remain available and you retain access. This is useful for everyday coordination, but should not be described as access restricted to just two endpoint devices.

The active-session list matters especially here: an authorized unfamiliar computer is another access point. A cloud password protects new logins, while an app lock helps on the device itself. Both measures are useful, but neither changes an existing chat’s encryption type. Premium does not enable end-to-end encryption for an ordinary cloud conversation either.

How to start a secret conversation

In a supported app, open the other person’s profile and its menu, then choose the action to start a secret chat. A phone makes it easier to confirm the correct conversation type. If the option is absent, check an official mobile client: having cloud conversations on a computer does not mean that client supports secret chats.

Wait for the connection to be established and check the secret-chat indicator. Earlier messages from the normal conversation do not move into it. Before discussing sensitive material, compare the key visualization through a trusted independent channel, ideally in person. Comparing it only through the same questionable channel provides less reassurance; the check should establish trust independently.

Why the history does not move to a new phone

Secret chats live on the devices where they were created and are tied to the session. Logging out loses those chats on that device. Signing in on a replacement phone does not download them from the cloud. Before changing devices, decide whether you need to continue that conversation and arrange a new secret chat with the person.

Do not confuse losing your local history with a guarantee that every copy elsewhere disappears. The recipient may have preserved its contents another way. Signing out is not a reliable method of erasing the conversation on someone else’s device. Use the chat’s deletion actions deliberately and recognize the limits of control over another device.

A timer cannot make a recipient trustworthy

A secret chat can apply a self-destruct timer to new messages after they are read. Set the intended mode before sending the information; older messages do not acquire the new timer retrospectively. Forwarding is restricted in secret chats, but that does not make their contents impossible to reproduce.

Neither a timer nor a screenshot warning prevents somebody photographing a screen with another phone. Consider what happens if the recipient repeats the message. That may be an acceptable risk for a temporary everyday detail. For a password opening an important service, a tool designed for secure credential sharing, followed by changing the secret when appropriate, is a better choice.

Example: travel plans and a personal conversation

You are arranging a meeting with a friend. A café address, time and tickets are convenient in a cloud chat so you can access them on any of your devices. Later, you want to discuss a personal matter with end-to-end encryption. Create a separate secret chat and agree to continue that discussion there.

There is no need to move every item automatically: travel details can remain in the cloud conversation while sensitive discussion goes into the new chat. Before replacing your phone, explain that another secret chat will be needed. This is clearer than claiming “all of Telegram is safer now”: you know where each conversation lives, who can access it and which history can be recovered.
