A number change is different from a new account

If your number changes permanently, you generally want to change it inside the existing account rather than register a different profile. Telegram provides a built-in number-change process that preserves account data. Signing in with another unused number does not merge histories. Understand this distinction before replacing a SIM and signing out of the old device.

First establish whether the main number is changing permanently. A temporary travel SIM may not require a Telegram number change if the original number remains yours and accessible. The SIM providing internet and the account’s number do not have to match.

Change the number from your existing account while retaining confirmation access. Review sessions and protection afterwards.

Prepare both sides of the change

Keep Telegram open on a trusted device and verify the intended profile, especially if you use multiple accounts. Ensure the new number is yours, has the correct country code, and can receive the offered verification. Avoid a temporarily rented number whose control ends after one SMS.

Check your additional password and recovery email beforehand. A number change should not coincide with losing every backup access route. If replacing the phone too, retain the old device until the new login is verified. Do not combine account migration, phone wiping, and every password change into one uncheckable action.

Start from the existing profile

Open the current account’s settings, select its number, and choose the built-in change-number action. This is the route documented in Telegram’s FAQ, although labels and placement may vary by client. Read the explanation and enter the new number carefully rather than choosing Add Account instead.

Complete the offered ownership check. Enter the code only into the official process you opened. Do not forward it to a carrier, helpful acquaintance, or bot. If the app reports a restriction or waiting period, record and follow it while keeping the current session. New registration is not a universal workaround for a migration error.

If the new number already has an account

Telegram warns that if a different account already exists on the target number, that account must be deleted first to migrate. This is not automatic merging. Stop and establish whose profile it is and what data matters. If it is your second account, save what you need and assess deletion separately.

Deletion is not a technical formality: it is irreversible and does not import the second profile’s history into the first. If the carrier recently issued the number, do not access someone else’s conversations or impersonate a previous holder. Follow official procedures and seek help if the account or number status is unclear.

Worked example: moving to another country

Imagine moving abroad and planning to close the old SIM while the new local number already works. While the existing account remains accessible, verify the password, start the number change, and confirm the new number. Check the profile, familiar chats, and work groups before arranging cancellation of the old line with the carrier.

If you also bought a new phone, verify its login separately. Do not wipe the previous device first. This sequence gives you a chance to catch mistakes and prevents a minor code-delivery problem from becoming complete loss of access to work conversations.

What to verify afterward

Open settings and confirm that the new number is shown. Check important cloud chats, Saved Messages, and communities you manage. Telegram describes data preservation during built-in number changes, including Secret Chats on their respective devices; this does not mean a Secret Chat appears on a new phone like a cloud conversation.

Separately review number visibility and publicly shared contact routes. Do not assume every contact learns the new number exactly as you expect: read the current process’s notice and tell important contacts what they need to know yourself. Avoid distributing the private number more widely than necessary.

Finish the transition carefully

After verification, review active devices and remove those you no longer use. If handing the old phone to someone else, handle local files and logout as a separate task. Changing the number does not wipe the device and does not establish that nothing remains on it.

Keep control of the new number and current recovery email. Make sure passwords are accessible beyond one phone. Successful migration means a preserved account, understood sign-in, and no forgotten dependencies, not merely the disappearance of old digits. If any of these are unresolved, retain your old working access for now.
