The essentials
- Read the stated delivery method before waiting for SMS.
- Keep your last working session signed in.
- Respect the timer and never share the code.
Start with the sign-in screen
Waiting for an SMS leads nowhere if the app sent the code by another route. Read the whole screen first: where confirmation was sent, which number is shown, and whether another option is available. Keep this screen open rather than starting a fresh request. Record the error text without the actual code in case you need help.
Make sure you are using an official app, available through telegram.org/apps. Do not enter your number into a service promising to deliver Telegram codes: that intermediary adds risk without controlling your authorization.

Check Telegram where you are already signed in
Look at Telegram on your old phone, tablet, and computer. The code may arrive in the Telegram service chat inside an existing account session. Do not confuse it with Verification Codes, which carries confirmations for third-party services. Those are different purposes even when both look like a short string of digits.
Keep the working session until you finish signing in on the new device. Logging out to “refresh things” removes a useful confirmation route and can destroy local Secret Chats. Troubleshooting is safer with an existing foothold than after removing your last working login.
If SMS is selected, check the number and service
Compare the country code and complete mobile number, especially on a dual-SIM phone. Your account number and the SIM providing mobile data can differ. Check that the relevant line is enabled and receives ordinary texts. When travelling, ask your carrier about incoming SMS and roaming restrictions; working Wi-Fi does not establish that the mobile line works.
If Telegram displays a timer, wait for it to finish. Avoid parallel attempts in multiple clients. When an alternative appears, select it inside the same official app and follow the on-screen explanation.
On a dual-line phone, note which number belongs to the account and which supplies internet. This reduces the risk of checking the wrong SMS inbox. Do not copy the login code into those notes.
Other routes depend on your account
Telegram may offer a configured login email, another session, or a previously created passkey. Use the route actually offered: having a password-recovery email does not mean this login code was sent there. A passkey also needs to have been prepared while the account was accessible.
A voice call is not a guaranteed fallback. Its availability depends on the authorization conditions. If a desktop or third-party client cannot receive an SMS code, try an official mobile client while preserving existing sessions. The available buttons are not identical on every device.
An enabled additional Telegram password is not removed by a passkey: you still need that password after passkey verification. Check both requirements beforehand so that changing the code-delivery route does not feel like an unexpected new lockout.
Worked example: a new phone while travelling
Consider a new phone connected to hotel Wi-Fi, no SMS, and Telegram still open on a laptop. First check the number and the new phone’s instructions. If the code was sent through Telegram, open the service chat on the laptop and enter it only in your own app. Another SMS request serves no purpose here.
If the screen explicitly says SMS, check the old SIM and roaming. Leave the laptop signed in. One check separates a mistaken expectation from a delivery problem while preserving access for the next step.
Handle errors and payment prompts carefully
When told there have been too many attempts, stop and follow the displayed waiting period. There is no universal “three-request limit”; reinstalling or switching networks is not a reliable way around it. If a code is rejected, match it to the current attempt and do not forward it to yourself through a chat.
Payment prompts need a separate check. Telegram documents a paid SMS authorization flow for certain country and carrier conditions in official clients. That does not legitimize a request to send money to a “support employee.” Check the app’s origin, payment purpose, and terms before approving anything.
When to ask for help
If no usable route remains, use telegram.org/support. Prepare your country, carrier, device model, app version, attempt time, and exact error text. Do not include a password, live codes, or screenshots containing secrets. Explain where the process stops: the request is not sent, the message never arrives, or confirmation is rejected.
After signing in, review the device list, keep your number current, and configure additional protection. Success means the new session works without sacrificing existing access, not merely that another code message was generated.
