The essentials
- Find surviving sessions first.
- Password recovery and account deletion have different consequences.
- A new account does not restore old history.
Identify what access is missing
“I cannot log in” can mean a lost phone, an unavailable number, a forgotten additional password, or a deleted account. Before resetting anything, establish whether Telegram works on any device, whether you control the linked number, and whether your recovery email is accessible. These answers determine the available data-preserving routes.
Do not delete the app or sign out of an old device merely to test access. If your chats still open there, that session is a useful resource. Restore a controlled login before removing surplus devices.
If several services become inaccessible together, investigate a shared dependency first: the phone, mailbox, or password manager. This avoids separate Telegram resets while the cause lies outside the messenger.

If a working session survives
Open account settings on a trusted device and check the linked number. If the old number is no longer yours but the session works, investigate the built-in change-number process using a new number you control. Do not automatically create a second account: that is a different operation and does not migrate the old conversations.
If a phone is lost, terminate its session through the device list when the app allows it. Surviving access also lets you review protection and login alerts. Blocking the SIM does not terminate a Telegram session; a phone connected to the internet may keep working without that SIM.
If the phone is gone but the number can be recovered
Contact your carrier through an official channel to ask about recovering your own number. A “similar” number is irrelevant: you need the linked one. Once service is restored, use official Telegram and the offered verification method. If an additional password is requested, receiving the code has solved only the first part.
SIM recovery and Telegram recovery are different. The carrier controls the phone line, not chat history or the messenger’s password. State the precise carrier action you need rather than spending time on irrelevant app-reinstallation advice.
Forgotten password: email first, then reset conditions
The two-step verification password differs from a login code and the app’s local passcode. If that is the forgotten credential, use built-in recovery through a previously verified email when available. Check the address hint; an arbitrary new mailbox cannot replace the configured one. Enter recovery codes only into the process you initiated.
If email is unavailable but a session survives, Telegram provides a separate password-reset route with a waiting period. Follow the app’s timing and conditions. This differs from deleting an account to register again. Before confirming, read exactly what is retained and what is lost.
Worked example: an old laptop matters
Suppose a phone is broken, the SIM has been replaced, and the login code leads to a forgotten password prompt. Telegram remains open on a home laptop. The wrong move is signing out there to reproduce the problem and “start fresh.” Preserve that session, examine password recovery, and check access to the configured email.
If the app offers a waiting period for a data-preserving reset, record its date without treating it as instant recovery. Protect the laptop and mailbox while waiting. This is why you should inventory surviving sessions before deleting or reinstalling anything.
Where recovery reaches its limits
If you have no access to the number, a live session, or an accessible sign-in method prepared beforehand, there is no universal username-based recovery procedure. Do not give a stranger claiming to restore accounts your ID, codes, session files, or screen control. A fixed-price promise to recover any account does not explain how ownership will be verified legitimately.
A deleted account is not merely a temporarily blocked account. Registering the same number again does not restore its old history. If the app explicitly proposes account deletion or a reset that loses data, pause and assess the consequences before agreeing.
Secure the result
After recovery, verify the correct profile and familiar cloud chats. Review devices and remove lost or unfamiliar sessions. Set an additional password you know and an accessible recovery email, completing its confirmation. A passkey can provide a useful extra route but is not a reason to abandon control of the phone number.
Keep recovery information outside your only Telegram session, such as a password in a reputable password manager. Instructions for emergency access should not exist exclusively inside the account they are meant to recover. This small organizational habit has a practical payoff.
