The essentials
- Check the chat, Telegram, and operating system in order.
- Missing sound and delayed messages are different symptoms.
- Repeat the same background test after each change.
Identify exactly what is missing
Is the sound missing, is there no banner, or does the message appear only after opening Telegram? These are different symptoms. Begin with one test contact in an ordinary private chat. Ask for a short message while the app is in the background and the phone is locked. Check the sound, on-screen notification, and message inside the app separately.
Do not test exclusively while the conversation is open; foreground notification behavior may differ. Record the result and change one setting at a time. Otherwise you will not know what fixed the issue or which useful restrictions you accidentally removed.
Agree on a backup contact route for important work messages during troubleshooting. This temporary measure helps prevent urgent questions being missed while you investigate the phone’s notification delay.

Check the conversation first
Open the affected chat’s details and check whether it is individually muted. Compare another private chat and, if relevant, a group. If only one conversation is silent, reinstalling all of Telegram is an unnecessarily broad first step. A conversation-specific exception better matches the symptom.
Consider the message type used for testing. Ordinary messages, mentions, and other categories can follow different rules. One missing sound does not mean the system stopped delivering every notification. Use the same simple text message for each comparison.
Review Telegram’s general notification settings
Find Notifications and Sounds in Telegram settings. Review the relevant categories and exceptions without enabling every alert indiscriminately. If private messages matter, you need not restore sounds for a hundred channels. Settings should fit the goal rather than produce the noisiest possible phone.
Check whether the relevant category has a silent sound setting. A visible but inaudible notification is a more specific clue than “nothing arrives.” Retest after the change and record the result. Move on to the operating-system layer once the app settings match your expectations.
Android: permission and categories
Open Telegram’s system app information and notification controls. Android supports app-level notifications and, on many devices, individual categories. Labels vary by manufacturer and version, so look for the setting’s purpose rather than copying a screenshot’s exact button sequence. Check whether the relevant category is set to silent.
If messages appear only when the app launches, inspect Telegram-specific background and battery restrictions using the phone manufacturer’s guidance. Do not disable all battery protection globally. Make a narrow change, retest with the screen locked, and check whether the delay actually improves.
iPhone: permissions, Focus, and summaries
In iPhone notification settings for Telegram, check permission and presentation locations: Lock Screen, Notification Center, or banners. Check sounds separately. Then inspect the active Focus and its schedule; notifications may be generally allowed but silenced at particular times.
Also check whether Telegram is included in a scheduled notification summary if you use that feature. A system-delayed notification is different from an undelivered message. You need not abandon a useful work mode entirely: adjust the relevant allowances and verify behavior with a test message.
Worked example: quiet evenings, normal mornings
Suppose Telegram alerts normally during the day, but evening messages are noticed only after unlocking. Compare the same private chat in both periods, then inspect scheduled Focus or Do Not Disturb. If the timing matches, change one rule temporarily and request another test message.
If alerts return, create an exception suited to your needs rather than removing every limit. If not, restore the original rule and continue investigating background operation and connectivity. This preserves useful evening quiet while addressing important notifications that were silenced unintentionally.
If these checks do not resolve it
Check for an official Telegram update and restart the device. Compare another network if notification delays accompany connectivity problems. For support, record the phone model, operating-system and Telegram versions, test time, and whether the message appeared immediately or only after opening the app. These details are more useful than a list of switches you touched.
Do not clear app data or sign out merely to restore sound. First establish that you can sign back in without losing local material. Finish with a real background test: an enabled switch does not prove the needed alert arrived.
