How to export Telegram chats to your computer

Export is for reading outside Telegram

Export helps preserve project arrangements, read a conversation offline or provide selected material to someone who cannot access the chat. The result is a set of files on your computer. It is not a new Telegram account or a promise that you can restore an entire conversation into Telegram with one click.

Begin by deciding exactly what you need. One work chat covering a month is easier to check and safer to store than years of every conversation. An export may contain other people’s phone numbers, addresses and documents. Permission to read a conversation does not mean the whole folder should go to colleagues or an unfamiliar online converter.

Use the right desktop application

Telegram Desktop includes the official export tool. Do not expect the same feature in a mobile app, the browser version or every other desktop client. In particular, Telegram Desktop and the separate Telegram for macOS app should not be treated as the same product because their icons look similar.

Open the intended account in an up-to-date Telegram Desktop. For one conversation, find chat-history export in its menu. For a broader export, look for Telegram data export in settings; some versions place it under advanced options. If the client requires a security check or waiting period, follow that instruction. Do not disable account protection to work around the warning.

Choose the scope and format

Choose HTML for ordinary reading: a browser can open the history as a local page. JSON is useful for programmatic processing and structural analysis, but less comfortable to read without a suitable tool. Do not choose it merely because it sounds “more complete”; selecting the right export contents matters more.

Review the available attachment types, size limits and date range. For renovation discussions, photos may be part of an agreement while unrelated long videos only enlarge the folder. Save the result in a dedicated directory with a clear name and date. Check free disk space and make sure the chosen folder is not automatically synchronized to a shared work location.

If you need the conversation for a dispute or formal report, do not edit the only original export. Work on a copy and separately record which excerpts you selected. An ordinary export preserves content but does not itself establish legal status or authenticity of every detail. Ask the recipient about required format and authentication before investing time in a large compilation.

Open the result before calling it complete

Wait for the export to finish, then open the result from its generated folder. Check the beginning and end of the required period, several messages with files and important photos. One successfully opened page does not establish that all attachments are present: your filters may have excluded some material.

Keep an HTML export’s folder together. Moving only its main page can break links to images and documents. Try opening the copy from its intended storage location, not just the original output directory. For missing attachments, first check export settings and whether the originals remain available in the chat. Re-exporting with corrected options is more useful than guessing from broken links.

Example: preserving a contractor conversation

You have finished a small renovation and want to retain the agreed work list. Export that one chat for the project period, include photographs and documents, and choose HTML. After completion, locate the final estimate and open its attachment. Then check several before-and-after photographs.

For your own records, retain the complete set in a protected folder. If an accountant only needs an invoice, send the invoice rather than the entire personal discussion containing your home address and everyday details. Naming the folder with the project and export date helps distinguish this snapshot from current chat history; an old archive will not acquire new messages automatically.

Understand what the archive cannot do

Export cannot recover messages already deleted or retrieve secret chats from the cloud. Secret conversations use a separate device-bound model; a normal Desktop export is not their backup. Nor should you expect to preserve material whose access is restricted by the chat or which your account can no longer access.

The local copy needs its own protection. Telegram’s cloud password does not lock a folder on an unlocked shared computer. Store it on a protected personal device, limit unnecessary copies and decide how long you actually need it. Check a backup before deleting your only archive. The objective is a readable, verified copy, not merely a completed progress bar.
