The essentials
- A Telegram interface does not determine custody.
- Walt, DeFi Account and Telegram Money are not one account.
- Check recovery and the next withdrawal before depositing.
Identify the product first
“Telegram wallet or standalone wallet?” combines two separate questions: where the interface runs and who controls the keys. An app inside a messenger can be either a custodial service or a self-custodial wallet. A standalone application also needs its custody model checked.
At the time of review, the former Wallet product is called Walt. It contains a custodial account and a separate non-custodial DeFi Account. TON documentation also describes Telegram Money, Telegram’s native wallet for the GRAM coin. These are different products; recovery instructions for one should not automatically be applied to another. Identify the open account before funding it.

What custody means
A custodial provider holds the keys. You sign in to an account, and sending funds depends on its rules: supported assets, regional availability, identity checks and transaction processing. The displayed balance represents your funds within that provider’s accounting system.
This removes some key-storage responsibilities but creates dependence on the operator. If access is restricted or a transaction is under review, installing another wallet is not enough to withdraw that balance. Understand support and recovery conditions before losing access to Telegram, rather than afterwards.
What self-custody changes
In a self-custodial wallet, control depends on keys and the signing mechanism. Understand how backups are created, what the recovery phrase restores and which applications support the wallet contract. Copying an address alone does not transfer control of funds.
Do not assume every modern wallet uses the same backup design. Telegram Money, for example, documents its own backup and key-rotation features. A compatible import depends on the current phrase format. Before changing settings or deleting an app, read the help for your particular version and ensure you understand recovery.
Example: similar screens, different consequences
Anna wants to receive a small payment and later pay a supplier. With a custodial account she first checks withdrawal support, limits and review conditions for that asset. With a self-custodial wallet she first checks her backup and how the next operation’s fees will be paid.
Both interfaces might label the button “Receive.” In the first case Anna relies on the service’s accounting; in the second she relies on control of a particular blockchain address. Receiving on a specified network is a separate requirement: a convenient login cannot make an incompatible route suitable.
Choose for the task and recovery
Describe the task without naming an app: receiving payment, holding an asset, connecting to an application or transferring to an exchange. Then check support for the asset and network. The GRAM coin and TON tokens can involve different steps and costs. A familiar logo is not a selection criterion by itself.
Next ask what happens if the phone is lost. Where is the backup? What remains possible without the old device? How will you verify that recovery produced the same address? Resolve unanswered questions before considering a meaningful balance.
Convenience does not replace security
Protect Telegram, the device and the wallet separately: screen locks, current software and session checks address different risks. Never send a recovery phrase to support, store it in a public cloud document or enter it at a stranger’s request in direct messages.
Connecting a wallet to an application is not approval for every later operation. Review every signature request: destination, amount, token and purpose. Self-custody removes the operator from key management, but it does not automatically protect against signing a deceptive transaction.
Importing is not transferring
Importing a supported recovery phrase into a compatible app generally opens control of the existing wallet rather than sending its balance elsewhere. Creating a new wallet produces separate receiving details. Compare addresses and contract compatibility before switching interfaces. Do not try the phrase in random applications: each copy increases the places where the secret could be exposed. If a new interface shows an empty balance, check compatibility and account selection before assuming the assets disappeared.
When to postpone the decision
Pause if you cannot identify who holds the keys, explain recovery or find withdrawal rules. Do not move an entire balance merely for a new interface. Test the selected route with a sensible small amount that respects fees and limits.
Afterwards, verify not just receipt but the ability to perform your next intended action. Record which product you used and where its current conditions can be checked. Suitability comes from clear responsibilities and workable recovery, not whether the button sits inside or outside Telegram.
