The essentials
- Practice in Saved Messages: releasing the button may send the video.
- Swipe up to lock recording and use pause when needed.
- Send addresses and numbers as text too.
Start from the message composer
A Telegram round video is a short video message with a circular frame. You record it directly in the conversation, much like a voice message. If you already filmed a long clip with your phone’s camera, a normal video attachment may be more suitable; not every clip needs converting just for its appearance.
For your first attempt, open Saved Messages and practice with an innocuous sentence. This lets you learn the button behavior without accidentally posting a take in a work chat. Check your position inside the round frame: the corners of a rectangular image cannot save an important object placed too far to one side. Keep essential details near the center.

Switch modes and begin recording
Find the microphone icon beside the message field. In the supported mobile interface, a short tap switches it to a camera. Press and hold the camera button to start recording. If the operating system asks for camera and microphone access, read the request and grant only the needed permissions to the official app you are using.
Releasing the held button can send the message immediately, so learn the controls before recording an important take. If a permission prompt appears instead of recording, resolve it first and start again deliberately. A few seconds are enough for your first attempt: the aim is to understand the mechanism, not record a perfect greeting for the entire available duration.
Record without holding the button
While recording, swipe upward to lock recording mode. You can then release your finger and use the available controls. Current Telegram versions support pausing and resuming, which lets you take a short break instead of sending several disconnected fragments.
Before sending, identify the controls for finishing, discarding and sending in your interface. Do not experiment with an unfamiliar icon on a message you cannot afford to send accidentally. To show an object, switch cameras where supported and recheck the center of the frame. Rotating the phone or switching cameras mid-sentence often makes an explanation less clear than a short pause would.
Make the message easy to watch
Start with the point: “Here is the entrance” or “This is the part we need to replace.” Show one object, then finish with a clear conclusion. Send an address, amount or time as text too; searching for a number is easier than replaying video in a noisy place.
Light in front of your face is usually more helpful than a bright window behind you. Hold the phone close enough for clear speech without covering its microphone. If a headset is connected, test a short take because its microphone may be in use. A normal video or several coherent parts suits a long explanation better. Watch the remaining-time indicator rather than speaking until recording cuts off.
For a work message, consider whether the recipient can listen now. A short text introduction naming the subject helps them decide whether to open it immediately. Do not hide the only wording of an urgent task inside an unlabeled video; they may postpone watching until somewhere quiet. State the essential outcome in a sentence alongside it and use the video for a detail or tone that genuinely benefits from being shown.
Example: showing the correct entrance
You are meeting a friend at a building with several doors. Record a brief round video: name a landmark, show the correct entrance and explain where you are waiting. Send the address separately as text. Before posting, check that the frame does not expose someone’s documents, a close-up access-code panel or people who should not be filmed.
If the message needs to remain available, avoid accidentally enabling one-time playback. Voice and video messages have a separate view-once mode available after recording is locked. It can be useful, but often works poorly for directions: your friend may need to replay the entrance as they approach. Choose the mode around the recipient’s task.
Missing camera, black preview or no sound
If the icon will not switch, check that the composer is not occupied by text and that you are using a current supported client. For a black preview, check operating-system camera permission and whether another app is using the camera. If audio is missing, separately check microphone access, any connected headset and playback of a sent test.
Reinstalling Telegram should not be the first response: it rarely identifies the specific cause and may affect local data. Start with permissions, restarting the app and a harmless Saved Messages test. If the problem remains, send a normal video or text. A good video message is one the other person understands, not one that preserves its circular shape at any cost.
