The essentials
- Clear local cache rather than conversations.
- Save essential offline files separately first.
- Adjust download and retention settings to limit recurrence.
Understand what occupies storage
Telegram can keep downloaded photos, videos, and documents on your device. These local copies let you reopen media without another download, but accumulate over time. Cache and conversation history serve different purposes: reducing one should not become deletion of the other. Start with Telegram’s storage-usage controls rather than deleting chats.
Check which categories and conversations consume the most space. A single video-heavy channel may matter more than dozens of text conversations. Set a concrete goal: make room for a phone update, remove old videos, or reduce future storage growth.

Save what you need offline first
Before cleanup, identify tickets, work documents, and files needed while travelling. If Telegram holds their only convenient copy, save the necessary items separately in a clearly named folder and verify they open. Do not assume you can download a document again after connectivity disappears.
A cloud message may later be deleted, and a Secret Chat is not an ordinary cloud archive. “Everything can always be restored” is too broad a promise. Keep a separate copy of particularly important files, independent of messenger cache, and consider the confidentiality of wherever work documents are saved.
Test an offline copy by opening it from its chosen folder rather than the Telegram message. This verifies that you saved the document itself instead of a link or shortcut that needs the messenger again.
Use Telegram’s own cleanup controls
Find Storage Usage or equivalent in settings, usually under data and storage. Names and locations vary between clients. Review the overview, choose unnecessary categories or specific chats, and read the final action carefully. You want local cache cleanup, not message deletion for yourself or both participants.
Start with clearly unnecessary large media and confirm the selection. Afterward, open a familiar cloud conversation: its text history should remain, while cleared attachments may need downloading. This checks what the operation actually did rather than merely celebrating a smaller gigabyte figure.
Do not confuse three different actions
Clearing cache inside Telegram, clearing app data in the operating system, and deleting a chat are different actions. A system data reset can remove local app state and require sign-in again. Conversation deletion affects the messages within its selected scope. Signing out is not a careful media-cleanup technique either; it entails loss of local Secret Chats.
If an online instruction tells you to press a differently named button, pause and read the warning. The confirmation screen matters more than generic advice. Do not repeat actions blindly because the storage number has not yet matched your expectations.
Worked example: making room before a trip
Imagine your phone reports low storage before a trip. Telegram contains many channel videos and a few essential documents in Saved Messages. Save the documents separately and test them offline first. Then clear unnecessary video categories through built-in storage controls without deleting history or the account.
Check the phone’s available storage afterward. If the goal is met, do not keep deleting data to reach zero. The app itself, supporting data, and useful local files still occupy space. The aim is enough storage and accessible documents, not an aesthetically empty usage report.
Control future growth
After the one-time cleanup, review automatic media downloads and available cache-retention rules. Telegram offers automatic removal controls for cached media by chat category; inspect the actual options in your client. Choose settings suited to your connection and habits rather than the strictest possible configuration.
Someone with a limited mobile allowance may not benefit from downloading the same items repeatedly. A person following many video channels at home may benefit more from limiting automatic downloads. This is a trade-off between storage, connectivity, and convenience: cache cleanup can shift costs from memory to repeated downloads.
If the result is smaller than expected
Compare like-for-like figures: Telegram reports its own storage, while the operating system may combine the app and additional data. Also inspect downloads folders and the photo library separately; copies saved there are not necessarily Telegram cache. Delete those copies only after verifying they are unnecessary.
If the interface freezes or the calculation appears wrong, restart the app and reassess. Do not expect an exact amount of reclaimed space based on an old screenshot. Finish when sufficient space is available, important files open, and download rules fit your needs.
